A Personal Note From John Sheehan:

You might be wondering by now, who or what the heck I am or do. I really  have over 3o years of experience as a Television News, Programing, Marketing Consultant and as a Senior Level Broadcasting Executive.

MME 5
I have been able to help clients achieve their personal and/or company goals, using my three decades+ of experience in the Media Industry.

This has been particularly helpful (So I’m told.) to Television Stations, Networks and Talent.

The key to success is establishing and then building on each Client’s compelling strengths.  My experience has been that success for On-Air Personalities occurs, after their intrinsic strengths are established and built upon.

The Client’s unique Presentation Brand almost always manifests itself during the identification process.  Rarely have I encountered a start over.

The same hold true for Local Station News.  There really is no reason to start from scratch. What is different is ascertaining what works in a given market and then fitting Clients’ News Products into their market’s preferences and marketing grammar.

Rarely is a News Department a rudderless ship.  Sometimes they have simply moved away from what made them successful, in the first place.  If News Shows have never been competitive, that’s because they haven’t delivered a product and Talent, tailored to their market preferences.

All the promotion and marketing in the world can’t fix this.  They first have to inventory what they do well and simply do more of it.  This minimizes product weaknesses as the strengths take center stage.

Whatever that is… is their Brand.  And, this is how they identify themselves to the News Viewers.  Subsequently, their product’s weaknesses will dissipate organically, as they focus on, and promote their native strengths.

I have been involved with Content Development and Branding over 40 Stations and shows.  Sometimes they built successful News Brands from who they already were.  Other times they adjusted their organization into the Brand they wanted to become.  Key in both scenarios was not throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

The only difference with applying this marketing concept to Talent is that the approach is personal and not institutional.  In almost all successful cases,  News Organizations and Talent initially focused on their native strengths and built from there.  They never attempted to imitate a competitor’s strengths.

Why? No two entities are or can occupy the same space.  Imitation will lead to failure, while strengthening the incumbent competitor.  Being yourself, so to speak, allows you to appear where your competition isn’t and can’t ever be.

I have also found that this approach is also useful to other kinds of businesses, wishing to grow their market share via marketing.  Last year I helped increase an US Insurance Company increased its awareness by over 2,000%.

Obviously there was no way they could change their product.  What they could do is build on what they already believed in, which concurrently was what their targeted market segment (Filipino Americans) cared about.

The client was deeply committed to helping families with their insurance products and their targeted prospects were extremely family oriented.  So, it was a matter of inventorying the Client’s belief system (Strengths), and making that the face of their insurance product’s Brand.

I borrowed and modified a well known Station Brand Slogan,  and supporting marketing campaign.  Where News Comes First became Where The Family Comes First.  This adaptation worked very well since most people have heard of Where News comes First.

Line extending this already known advertising theme into Where the Family Comes First hit the Targeted Market’s hot buttons, based on their core values, and familiarity with the slogan’s shell.  It made sense to them.

It amazes me how many Television product and marketing methodologies transfer to other businesses.  Of current interest to me is promoting Palawan and Philippines Tourism.  There are several posts on this Blog, regarding what Palawan has to offer visitors, particularly those interested in nature or eco-tourism.

Why? I live in Puerto Princesa, Palawan Province, in The Republic of The Philippines.  I highly recommend Puerto as a place to visit.

I spent many years in the Western and South Pacific, plus the Far East. I am fluent in some of the Asia/Pacific languages. It’s a long story and we can save it for another time.

However, my mother thought it was over the word Corps. She felt I was like a moth to a flame, when I heard the word Corps. Maybe. I was in the Marines and Peace Corps. I was also a freelance producer in The Far East. I think she blocked that out.

My business is US Driven. However, these days I’m hanging my hat, while managing my US business, from Palawan in the Western Philippines.

The Philippines is not a technology laggard. Anything but.

  • Technology allows me to operate just like I did, back in Dallas, Texas.
  • Palawan is a wonderful, beautiful place with no crime and the nicest people, maybe on Earth. I served in this country years ago, and always wanted to come back. Three and an half years ago, I did just that.
  • I think very highly of the Filipino culture, lifestyle and people. You will not meet better people anywhere.
