Expanded: 1-12-15: Profiles of Palawan People Who Make the Difference

©Millennium Media Entertainment

I am interviewing people here in Puerto Princesa that ought to be roll models for others. These people are not One Percenters. but they are the ones who make the wheels turn here, or will someday.

homepage

I have set up interviews with people from all walks of life in Puerto, so I can tell their stories through the US Media. This will help Americans know the very real people here.  The goal here is provide Journalistic balance about this 200 mile long island province in the Western Philippines, perhaps the lowest crime rate on Earth.

They are Wholesale/Retailers in the Central Market, business owners, mangers and educators. I plan to tell their stories in the US News Media.  What you’re reading here are what we call Teases or Previews. in the American News Business.

Here’s what I have found:

Edward del Rio, who is a Rice Wholesaler and Retailer. (Pictured here) Highly intelligent and humble man.

10915151_843639362355168_2650598227391614188_nEd 1

When asked about his business, he answered as if he was a Fortune 500 Executive. Ed said, "My business is about providing quality products, good service and maintaining strong relationships with my customers, who trust me.  I think they enjoy me as an entertaining friend, too." More to come about my friend later.

Ed’s business is located in the Old Public Market.

Another discovery is Danny and Lita Gabriel, who are Quality Perfectionists about what they offer Visitors and Locals.

Comeback is where you want to go for  right off the farm, fresh Palawan fruit.  It also has a wonderful selection of Filipino Pastries.

Comeback has a great location, not far from the Provincial Capitol, as you are heading down Rizal toward National Highway.  It’s is in front of a travel company called 3 Colors Ticketing.

10926400_1534592833445503_2129436527[1]You really can’t miss it and I hope you can meet Danny and Lita, who are wonderful people.

Their prices are very reasonable and the quality is very high.

I notice Danny and Lita checking the produce daily, to make sure it’s up to their standards.

Everything is Palawan Farm Fresh.

(I  shamelessly horned in the picture here)

Their pasty selection is extensive and to die for!

You can also get fresh green coconuts, which they will prepare for you.

benefits-of-drinking-coconut-water-2[1]

img_5207_thumb3And, after you drinking your fresh coconut, then you can eat it’s very nutritious meat.  Natural spoon included.

Did you know that coconut products are very good for you?  Here, we use coconut vinegar, which is loaded with vitamins.  Coconut oil also has more health benefits than Olive Oil.

I recommended you add Comeback  to your daily routine while in Puerto for a snack or even breakfast.

I thought I had left quality Pharmacies in the US. I was wrong about that and something else too. This one doesn’t have designer prices!  This is a success story, which I plan to include later  for the US New Media.

I found a very unique one here, that also sells beer and liquor, in addition to snacks, personal items, and light groceries.  I don’t think I know of another pharmacy offering beer and booze, in Puerto.

208694_201637763201020_2459804_n_thuRite One Pharma is where you should go, if you are staying in this part of the city.

They have about everything you need and even a little patio area, with tables and chairs for customers, in front on their Pharmacy.  Again, something the other Pharmacies here don’t offer customers.

You cannot go wrong with this pharmacy,  if you are staying in the airport area..

Rite One Pharma is walking distance to most of the hotels in the airport area. Also, it is open until midnight.

I personally enjoy shopping there because Rite One Pharma’s staff is very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and after a few visits, they all knew my first name. Now, they are friends of mine.

1 fullThey say there is a story behind every picture.  And in this case, that is true.  I have a a very good friend who is building his wholesale and retail business around coconut oil, coconut vinegar and sugar.

We shall call him Mr. Humble as a working title for this.

My friend who says he too shy to allow his picture to be used also sells a wide array of household products.  He has a great story which I am trying to figure how to tell.

The problem is not my Journalism expertise.  It’s him.  He is too humble!  He’s a work in progress and a great example of Filipino Humility.

His business however, is across the aisle from Ed de Rio’s.  This  picture is of me standing at Mr. Humble’s store entrance.  Cleary it’s thriving.

Below is what I do, if that interests you.

Millennium Media Entertainment is a Television News, Marketing, Programming Development and Content Consulting Firm, continuing to do business in the United States. Millennium is also involved with Television Talent Career and Presentation Development.

President and Chief Executive Officer John Sheehan has over 30 years of Senior Television Management Experience, Consulting Television Station Group Heads, Network Executives, Syndication Presidents, Chief Financial Officers, General Managers, Sales Managers, News Directors and Creative Services Managers about almost every aspect of the Television Business.

Besides News, Sheehan consulted several Nationally Syndicated TV Shows including: Win, Lose or Draw, with Burt Reynolds, A Current Affair, The Gail King Show, and Evening Magazine.

Sheehan started Millennium Media Entertainment as a News Program Syndication and Consulting Company in 1999, after being President of the Clemensen Sheehan Rovitto & Company since 1991.

While with CSR, Sheehan worked closely with the CEOs and managements of Allbritton Communications, Anchor Media, CBS Owned and Operated Television Stations, Group W Television (Westinghouse), New World, 20th TELEVISION, Group W Productions, Granite Broadcasting, and CBS’s EYEMARK ENTERTAINMENT.

Sheehan was President and General Manager of Audience Research & Development, from 1988 to 1991. As president, he directed a staff of nearly 60 highly skilled television professionals, providing broadcast research and consulting services to over 120 stations, broadcast and cable networks and syndication clients.

Before joining AR&D in 1985, Sheehan was Executive Vice President of SRI Research Center, now The Gallup Organization. He started as Production Manager for SRI in late 1977 and within two years was named Executive Vice President, overseeing all market research and financial operations with a staff of more than 80 people.

When Sheehan left Tonga Feeds, nearly bankrupt when he arrived, the company was earning a 30% profit and influenced 25% of the Kingdom’s economy. Sheehan was offered senior management positions by both the New Zealand and Kingdom of Tonga Governments. He returned to the US in 1977.

Sheehan earned a BA in Journalism from Creighton University. He fluently speaks Tongan and Melanesian Pidgin. He has a working knowledge of Cebuano.

My Puerto Princesa To Do List: Tourist Driven Businesses. Building Higher Awareness For Palawan Though Journalism Via US Media.

© Millennium Media Entertainment
todolist_logo
1st On My List:
asian_h1Show businesses (NO CHARGE) how to apply proven brand marketing strategies to grow their businesses, principally through Tourism. I am convinced Tourism is a fast way for improving what people are paid and thus the economy.
Most businesses here don’t utilize marketing. Many think it all word of mouth. Guess what kids? Not for Americans or Europeans. They could care less about the word of mouth thing.

James Deakin photoThey rely on Google and social media, not just FB, to make decisions. You have to get the right message to these people about your goods or services, or the only way they will find you is by accident.
People here think everyone is like them. If you want foreign tourists, then you have to attract them, in ways familiar to them. You have to address how they do things, not how you do.

facebook_like_logo.gif 2google-06Half-done websites and FB pages will just about insure the Foreigners will never come near you. Why would they after you already indicated you don’t put much into your services?

You are secret, if you don’t have a website, use FB and LinkedIn. How will Foreign Guests know that you even exist? Granted, back packers roam the city, but they are not representative of what most Foreign Tourists do.
0Most decide before they get here via TripAdvisor, Google and social media. Your business has to showcase benefits beyond the Underground River and Island Hopping. For example:
  • Service
  • Trained friendly, responsive, helpful, efficient staff.
  • Lots and lots of pictures to tell your business’s story.  Show people using your product, not just empty dinning room s sales stalls and courtyards.
These people will go home and either praise or hang your business over the above, on TripAdvisor. Then you will get your word of mouth, for better or worse.
The other day I was standing right in front of a pharmacy on Rizal. A European couple asked where they could find one close by? They said they couldn’t find anything they trusted on the net. (See?)
I pointed to the pharmacy right behind and me and told them the place was great, with a wonderful staff. I indicated the patio furniture in front of the place saying they could get a soda or beer and take a break.
My advice identified the Brand and I was the marketing messenger.
James Heaton of New York Based Tronvig Group tells us:
Branding is strategic. Marketing is tactical.
Marketing may contribute to a brand, but the brand is bigger than any particular marketing effort. The brand is what remains after the marketing has swept through the room.
What Jim means is that your Brand is what beings people back to your business based on their last experience there. Marketing is what brought them there. You combine both on social media and websites.
Try not to clutter up your marketing with poorly produced graphic specials. Most of what I’ve seen is busy and promises all kinds of things. Pick one or two things for your Brand and use Marketing to communicate the benefits, to entice them.
Wish me well with all this, since I would like to see businesses here do better.
2nd on My List: Developing Positive Palawan Image/Awareness in The US Media and Therefore the World. Goal is Increasing Tourism Via Journalism.
I used to fight with all of them. Their Philippines coverage historically is why Thailand gets four times as many tourists.  We should have a far better image.
Why you ask? The foreign press doesn’t follow cover Thailand News as closely as they this country.  Example:

Phuketwan - Phuket news on tourism, property, jobs, and entertainment

More Brits Dying In Thailand: Total Deaths Jump By 31 Percent

By Alan Morison
Thursday, July 18, 2013
flag1PHUKET: British officials have faced a startling rise in the number of deaths and hospitalisations of British citizens in Thailand, newly-released figures show.
Deaths jumped from 296 in 2011-2012 to 389 in the year ending April 1 this year. Hospitalisations rose from 217 to 285 in the same period, the official statistics show.
The increase in both is a sharp rise of 31 percent. The figures will cause concern because all other statistics remained stable.
There were 36 drug arrests, 188 total arrests, and nine rapes, down from 13 the previous year. The media release accompanying the new figures refers specifically to Thailand as follows: ''Thailand has seen a significant increase in hospitalisations (31pc) and deaths (31pc), despite fewer cases worldwide.
The above is just about one country’s citizens dying in Thailand. Reuters has done investigative pieces on human trafficking in Thailand, too. None of this got any worldwide coverage.
The Philippines would be absolutely taken apart by the world media if a fraction of that happened here. One reason is Thailand doesn’t have a free press to cherry pick gory subjects from. And, the Philippines has a free press and thus an open book.
by-default-2014-07-10-at-7.02.38-PM
There is little balance to Philippines coverage. CNN, the Economist, and Time Magazine have it in for the country. So, does the rest else to a lesser extent, except The Associated Press and the US Television Broadcast Networks, who I can talk with as a Broadcast News Journalist. Last year though, National Geographic did a hatchet job on an 80 year old priest in Cebu. Disgraceful reporting.
I admit I have not made as much progress as I would like. So, I am trying a different tact. I am going to write human interest stories on people here. Tomorrow I plan to interview two wholesalers in the Central Market.
2cwlz6wI want to know how they got started and what their business are like. I want to know what their lives and are like and I plan to place these reports into the US media.
Maybe we can balance out the bad stuff, building a positive image and awareness for Puerto and the Province by telling compelling stories about real people.
These stories will be Palawan’s Brand and getting them placed is the marketing.

In the meantime, I will continue take care of my US Television News Anchor and Reporter Clients.
Screenshot_2 (2)I may also use my TV News/Programming/Marketing Background for a few European or American companies wanting to increase sales Brand marketing and access to my News Media Connections.

Press Release: Millennium Media Entertainment Providing Groups and Local Stations New Economical Talent Coaching and Recruiting Services.

MME President John Sheehan announced today that his firm can provide Local Stations with 75 critiques a month, Coaching five reporters or three anchors for about 1/3 of the day rate most Coaching services charge.

“This is only one illustration of the service. We tailor our Coaching Services to what Client stations need. I have never known a General Manager or News Director that didn’t feel some reporters and anchors needed performance direction and perspective, he said.

NDSheehan says the traditional Coaching is too expensive, outdated, and doesn’t work. “These Coaches visit once, twice, four times a year. Think about it. How does Coaching Talent for an hour or two, one to four times a year going to make any lasting difference?”

Sheehan says performance regression can occur a week later. He says it’s repetition and follow up are what drives Talent performance improvement. “There is also too much drama with these visits. I often wondered who this was really about….The Talent or the Coach?”

“Why does anyone travel anymore? We use Skype for one on one Coaching sessions and email critiques to fill the gaps between sessions. I have never met many my private clients in person, except for meetings on Skype.

635544258008350143-121714patrick-crawfordSheehan says this Coaching approach has been very successful for MME’s Talent Clients, over the years. “It’s all about identifying their strengths and building from there. But again, this about Coaching Talent frequently and not randomly, occasionally,” he said

He says that MME’s Coaching isn’t a negative experience for Talent. “You focus first on what they are naturally good at. Then, Coach them in the areas they need help with,” Sheehan said.

“Our Coaching is tailored to each individual and isn’t formula driven, because no two people are the same. You can’t apply the same approach over and over, or only a few can improve.”

Sheehan said that MME provides a service structure, which best fits Client needs. “We will talk with stations and structure the services to fit their individual needs,” he said.

Local News Turmoil Might Be A Career Opportunity

©Millennium Media Entertainment

con-fea-01-image03

The Station News Business Has definitely changed. This may give you ideas about how to benefit from the recent personnel turnover/turmoil, thus furthering your career.

There's has been unprecedented upheaval with station news personnel over the last four months. Some groups seem to be treating their stations like pro sports franchises.

No matter if you are coming up or tenured, it is all about presentational performance. Stations now are demanding the best performance from Talent.

We might be able to help you in this new business environment. Our Talent Services are successful for clients. I have a client who was in Market 197. We worked hard on his performance and did a demo. He has two upcoming meetings in MKT 6 and an offer from a Top 30.

Companies are more demanding than ever about solid, consistent presentational performance. If they don’t see it, then they will find Talent who can give them what they want, just as a pro sports team does with players.

Here is the opportunity for the ambitious, who really want to move up.

Take a look at this posting on my Blog:

Local Television Stations Continue Aggressively Dismissing News Management And Talent Across The Industry. What Talent Should Be Doing. http://johnsheehan17.blogspot.com/2014/12/local-television-stations-continue.html

And, this trend affects all market sizes and sooner or later, most people on air. They really want new young people. But, Stations have developed an attitude toward so-called Millennials.

CBS just did a rather scathing report on this demo group.

Are millennials too spoiled for the workplace?

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/are-millennials-too-spoiled-for-the-workplace/

frustrated-woman

I sincerely hope you are nothing like what CBS reported. If you are, this is the wrong career path, if you can't adjust to what News Management expects. Television tends to be an unforgiving Industry

I have talked with several News Directors and Recruiters about this and all agree there is a problem with finding qualified, unknown Talent. This is a supply and demand industry. Currently, there is demand but not enough supply.

There is a wonderful job market for smart young people, who will work for it.

best of bestThe young Anchor/Reporter mentioned above is getting tons of attention.  He is in his mid 20's and only worked in one little station. He is young, smart and hard working and exactly what Big Stations are looking for.

I enjoy working with him. We both put in long hours over his work, so he could make a jump. He can jump 160 Markets, at this writing. But, he has two upcoming meetings in the San Francisco DMA.  Isn’t this what you want?  The ability to move up to a great job?

I was thinking the other day about aspiring actors waiting tables in LA or New York. Some how they find a way to hire acting and voice coaches. But, aspiring TV Talent rarely does the same.

All these industry changes caused us to realign our Talent Development Services, suspending our representation services, except for existing representation clients. There is no point due to a shortage of Talent ready to move up.

So, We have decided to focus on our first and oldest service, Talent Performance and Career Development. Our mission is now to work with people on their presentations so they can meet this new demand.

Thanks for reading this and I hope you found it useful.
