Expanded: 1-12-15: Profiles of Palawan People Who Make the Difference

©Millennium Media Entertainment

I am interviewing people here in Puerto Princesa that ought to be roll models for others. These people are not One Percenters. but they are the ones who make the wheels turn here, or will someday.

homepage

I have set up interviews with people from all walks of life in Puerto, so I can tell their stories through the US Media. This will help Americans know the very real people here.  The goal here is provide Journalistic balance about this 200 mile long island province in the Western Philippines, perhaps the lowest crime rate on Earth.

They are Wholesale/Retailers in the Central Market, business owners, mangers and educators. I plan to tell their stories in the US News Media.  What you’re reading here are what we call Teases or Previews. in the American News Business.

Here’s what I have found:

Edward del Rio, who is a Rice Wholesaler and Retailer. (Pictured here) Highly intelligent and humble man.

10915151_843639362355168_2650598227391614188_nEd 1

When asked about his business, he answered as if he was a Fortune 500 Executive. Ed said, "My business is about providing quality products, good service and maintaining strong relationships with my customers, who trust me.  I think they enjoy me as an entertaining friend, too." More to come about my friend later.

Ed’s business is located in the Old Public Market.

Another discovery is Danny and Lita Gabriel, who are Quality Perfectionists about what they offer Visitors and Locals.

Comeback is where you want to go for  right off the farm, fresh Palawan fruit.  It also has a wonderful selection of Filipino Pastries.

Comeback has a great location, not far from the Provincial Capitol, as you are heading down Rizal toward National Highway.  It’s is in front of a travel company called 3 Colors Ticketing.

10926400_1534592833445503_2129436527[1]You really can’t miss it and I hope you can meet Danny and Lita, who are wonderful people.

Their prices are very reasonable and the quality is very high.

I notice Danny and Lita checking the produce daily, to make sure it’s up to their standards.

Everything is Palawan Farm Fresh.

(I  shamelessly horned in the picture here)

Their pasty selection is extensive and to die for!

You can also get fresh green coconuts, which they will prepare for you.

benefits-of-drinking-coconut-water-2[1]

img_5207_thumb3And, after you drinking your fresh coconut, then you can eat it’s very nutritious meat.  Natural spoon included.

Did you know that coconut products are very good for you?  Here, we use coconut vinegar, which is loaded with vitamins.  Coconut oil also has more health benefits than Olive Oil.

I recommended you add Comeback  to your daily routine while in Puerto for a snack or even breakfast.

I thought I had left quality Pharmacies in the US. I was wrong about that and something else too. This one doesn’t have designer prices!  This is a success story, which I plan to include later  for the US New Media.

I found a very unique one here, that also sells beer and liquor, in addition to snacks, personal items, and light groceries.  I don’t think I know of another pharmacy offering beer and booze, in Puerto.

208694_201637763201020_2459804_n_thuRite One Pharma is where you should go, if you are staying in this part of the city.

They have about everything you need and even a little patio area, with tables and chairs for customers, in front on their Pharmacy.  Again, something the other Pharmacies here don’t offer customers.

You cannot go wrong with this pharmacy,  if you are staying in the airport area..

Rite One Pharma is walking distance to most of the hotels in the airport area. Also, it is open until midnight.

I personally enjoy shopping there because Rite One Pharma’s staff is very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and after a few visits, they all knew my first name. Now, they are friends of mine.

1 fullThey say there is a story behind every picture.  And in this case, that is true.  I have a a very good friend who is building his wholesale and retail business around coconut oil, coconut vinegar and sugar.

We shall call him Mr. Humble as a working title for this.

My friend who says he too shy to allow his picture to be used also sells a wide array of household products.  He has a great story which I am trying to figure how to tell.

The problem is not my Journalism expertise.  It’s him.  He is too humble!  He’s a work in progress and a great example of Filipino Humility.

His business however, is across the aisle from Ed de Rio’s.  This  picture is of me standing at Mr. Humble’s store entrance.  Cleary it’s thriving.

Below is what I do, if that interests you.

CBS Asks if Millennials are Too Spoiled for the Workplace In A Recent Report. Many Local Stations Wonder About So Called “Millennial” Talent. Great Career Opportunities for Exceptional Younger Talent.

The Station News Business is changing. This post may give you ideas about how to benefit from these changes and thus, further your career.  Fairly or unfairly, biases against this demo are growing, in the News Business.

WorkingWith-615x400Stations have developed an attitude toward so called Millennials.  Hopefully, this will make younger Talent aware of this development and stay out of trouble with News Managements.

There a major growing station management resentment and those who buy out existing contracts to leave a current job, have a shelf life in this business.

If you are a a so called Millennial, you need to be careful in the Station News business.   However, if you are ambitious and hard working, you will stand out.  Everyone is looking for smart young Talent.

CBS just did a rather scathing report on this demo group.

Are millennials too spoiled for the workplace?

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/are-millennials-too-spoiled-for-the-workplace/

Millennials-spoiled-entitled-or-just-being-young-adultsI have talked with several News Directors and Recruiters about this and all agree there is a problem with finding qualified, unknown Talent, with a solid work ethic. I sincerely hope Dear Reader you not anything like what I have described herein.

It will get very difficult to stay in this business if you don’t work hard. I also have head that Stations might demote or let recent hires go, because they don’t get or won’t work hard enough.

I was thinking the other day about aspiring actors waiting tables in LA or New York.  Somehow they find a way to hire acting and voice coaches.  But, aspiring TV Talent rarely does the same.

This is a supply and demand industry.  Currently, there is demand but not enough supply. There is a wonderful job market for smart young people, who will work for it.

There's has been unprecedented upheaval with station news personnel over the last four months. Some groups seem to be treating their stations like pro sports franchises.

No matter if you are coming up or tenured, it is all about presentational performance.  Stations now are demanding the best performance from Talent.

iStock_000015068914SmallMany companies now only care about that and if they don’t see it, then they will find Talent who can give them what they want, just as a pro sports team does.  There is the opportunity for the ambitious who really want to move up.

This trend affects all market sizes and eventually, most people on air. No matter if you are coming up or tenured, it totally is all about presentational performance, which management believes in.

Take a look at this posting on my Blog.

Local Television Stations Continue Aggressively Dismissing News Management And Talent Across The Industry. What Talent Should Be Doing.

http://johnsheehan17.blogspot.com/2014/12/local-television-stations-continue.html

All these industry changes caused us to realign our Talent Development Services, suspending our representation services, except for existing representation clients.  There is no point, due to a shortage of Talent ready to move up.

So, We have decided to focus on our oldest service, Talent Performance and Career Development.  Our mission is now to work with people on their presentations so they can meet this new demand.

Local Television Stations Continue Aggressively Dismissing News Management And Talent Across The Industry. What Talent Should Be Doing.

© Millennium Media Entertainment

cost-cutting-ideasI have never written an editorial, but I think one is needed now. I don’t fault Broadcast companies who are determined to improve their stations’ ratings/revenue performances. In fact, they are supposed to do just that.

Complacency crept into the business during the 80’s. You would hear that it took two years for a reporter or anchor to gain viewer awareness, as well as a myriad of other excuses about where ratings growth was or wasn’t.

Talent and management more or less coasted and rarely were there large scale dismissals or early terminations. That has radically changed in the last four months.

Tenured Talent and management have been the targets. These new super groups want results and will do whatever it takes to get them. Tenured Talent should take steps to safeguard the jobs.

inspirational-quote-right-trackThere are plenty of ways for them to remain attractive to their managements:

  • If you gained weight over the years, lose it.
  • Do not be complacent, ignoring what is going on around you.
  • Refresh your on air brand, so your management sees perceived value in your work. Reintroduce yourself to your employer through your work.
  • Contribute story ideas in morning or afternoon meetings.
  • Hire outside help with your presentation/performance and look. New people really need to get their presentations in order. Should be a write off, so you get your career investment back. That is cheaper in than not having a job at all, plus you can usually write it off.
  • Consider that aspiring actors, waiting tables, find ways to hire acting coaches. For some reason TV Talent doesn’t.
  • Always have an updated demo.  A new one could be hard to create if you are dismissed.

These station dismissals are going to continue and have become standard operating procedures, when stations don’t get what they want.

This is creating a job vacuum, which is good for younger Talent, if they are ready, which most are not. Newer Talent need to understand that if stations toss out tenured people, they are not going to replace them with under motivated, inexperienced people.

firedorhiredIt is now harder for new people to move up in an environment where tenured, experienced people are being dismissed.

Those tossed out are better than you are, so the jump bar has been raised higher.

But there are things you can do:

  • Get Ambitious and work for it.
  • Stop listening to your peers who know no more about the business than you do.
  • Lock down your presentation performance and develop your on air brand.
  • Learn how this business works.
  • Get in shape.
  • Again, consider outside help with your presentation/performance and look. New people really need to get their presentations in order. Should be a write off, so you get your career investment back. Consider that aspiring actors, waiting tables, find ways to hire acting coaches. For some reason TV Talent doesn’t.
  • Have a fresh demo and marketing materials ready to go.

What surprises me most about all of this is how apathetic most Talent are right now. Meanwhile all hell has broken out in this business. There are many opportunities, if you take the steps to either protect or advance your career.
